Chris Sievey aka Frank Sidebottom dies after suffering a brain tumour

Chris Sievey aka Frank Sidebottom died today after recently suffering a brain tumour.

Chris Sievey was the lead singer with Manchester new wave band The Freshies who came closest to having a hit single in 1981 when they reached number 54 in the UK Singles chart with I’m In Love With A Girl On A Certain Machester Megastore Checkout Desk.

But truth be known The Freshies weren’t very good and Chris Sievey as Frank Sidebottom, complete with paper-mache head, was very very funny.

Sievey continued had more success with Frank Sidebottom. Caroline Aherne’s Mrs Merton character started off as Frank Sidebottom’s sidekick in Sievey’s successful Radio 4 series, Radio Timperley. Other celebrities that started off working with Frank Sidebottom was the DJ Mark Radcliffe, who was a member of Sidebottom’s ‘Oh Blimey Big Band‘ and Chris Evans who once held the job as Frank Sidebottom’s driver.

Though he has toured continually since the 1980’s he is probably best known in the North West where he had a TV show, Frank Sidebottom’s Fantastic Shed Show; and also popped up on Granada TV as a reporter for regional news programme, Granada Reports.

Just 10 days ago Frank Sidebottom released his England football song for the 2010 South Africa World Cup, Three Shirts On My Line.
