Six years after its original release and available for the first time in four years, London’s punk hardcore Million Dead’s excellent debut album, A Song To Ruin, has been re-mastered and re-packaged to include the complete original album plus five bonus tracks of demos, b-sides and the single I Gave My Eyes To Stevie Wonder (great title).
The new ‘Deluxe Edition’ release comes complete with a DVD including Million Dead’s last ever London show at The Underworld on 22nd September 2005 in its entirety and all the promo videos for seven of their singles.
In their brief but popular history, Million Dead were renowned for their fast-paced gritty hardcore punk sound fashioned on their American hardcore heroes, Black Flag. But their music has more qualities and depth than other hardcore bands that simple copy those who have gone before them.
Million Dead were respected by their peers for the way they stretched boundaries and experimented with different sounds and unusual time signatures. But at the core of their music were great guitar riffs, throbbing bass lines, powerful drumming and the amazing lyrics, voice and stage presence of Frank Turner.
Million Dead had a limited lifespan and have since enjoyed cult status. While they were together they toured almost non-stop, building a following as much by word-of-mouth as with the help of such fans as John Peel, Zane Lowe, Mary Anne Hobbs and Steve Lamacq.
They recorded their first demo in September 2001 and released a further eight singles & ep’s and two albums before playing their final gig at Southampton’s Joiners venue on September 23rd 2005.
