The Pop Group Announce New Album, Single & Live Dates

The Pop Group Announce New Album, Single & Live DatesWith Honeymoon On Mars, The Pop Group open another chapter at a time when their iconoclastic contention is needed now more than ever. It’s a record that finds the band unwaveringly incensed and resolute in their mutative sense of innovation, as Mark Stewart elaborates: ‘it’s a stand against manufactured hate, a hypersonic journey into a dystopian future full of alien encounters and sci-fi lullabies’.

Recorded and mixed in various studios in early summer of 2016, working with Dennis Bovell and Hank Shocklee, the band realised a dream twofold collaboration, as Stewart concludes: “We’ve at last fulfilled a double fantasy to work with our two favourite sonic assassins, Dennis ‘Blackbeard’ Bovell and Hank Shocklee. We’re in awe as Dennis, the Captain Kirk of dub is taking us on a hyper sound voyage into the future, and Hank, as always tears up the rules totally upholding our faith in the absolute value of noise. We’ve gone completely off the map.”

Talking about working with The Pop Group, Shocklee said: “The Pop Group sound has a level of freedom, fun and creative musicianship in their recordings that is a special and rare find in today’s world. Their uncompromising spirit to be themselves and not worry about fitting into a musical box, sets them apart.”

Long-time collaborator Dennis Bovell added: “It’s been a great pleasure to be working with the guys again. They are truly beyond good and evil.”

IndianRedLopez announce second album ‘Commit’

IndianRedLopez announce second album, Commit
IndianRedLopez announce second album, Commit

IndianRedLopez make a welcome return with their second full-length record, Commit, due for release on 17th March 2014 via Cease:Stop Records. This latest offering follows up their excellent debut album, Empty Your Lungs And Breathe, which made waves online gaining coverage on the likes of Rock Sound, Drowned in Sound, The Skinny, The 405 and Artrocker and saw the band named Best Electronic Act at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards.

Commit immediately evokes feelings of a band who have grown leaps and bounds since their debut album. This record offers an endless depth – a depth which showcases the work of a band who are firmly coming into their element. The opening track ‘Any Given City’ kicks proceedings off, emoting heartfelt lyrics, beautiful harmonies and synth soundscapes that dreamily envelope the listener.

The album undulates through various genres as Giorgio Moroder and Talk Talk style 80’s synth-pop meets shoegaze stalwarts such as Mew and Spiritualized. The bands ability to play with, and blend genres so seamlessly, is no more apparent on tracks like ‘No Longer Dying’ – lead singer Mike’s echoing vocals are flanked by samples, unabated keys and synths and a driven, piercing drumbeat.

Commit was self-recorded in the bands own bunker studio in Aberdeen and at a cottage in the idyllic surroundings of Loch Fyne in Scotland. To promote the release, IndianRedLopez aim to stage a variety of pop-up style events, collaborative art events and listening parties, as well as embarking on a tour of the UK and Europe with dates in Holland and Belgium lined up.

The Aberdeen based band, consisting of Mike Chang (lead vocals, guitar, keys, samplers), Dave Cherry (backing vocals, guitar, synth/keys), Darren Forsyth (backing vocals, bass, synth/keys), Danny Forsyth (backing vocals, guitars, bass, samples, synth) and Scott Maskame (drums, samples, percussion), are part of the Aberdeen arts group 26 Collective, who share creative space, ideas and energy in the Aberdeen cultural community. Their DIY ethic is upheld in every facet of their creative output – from running their own club night (SHMEET) and their own label Cease:Stop Records, to tour booking, recording and artwork. This has led to singer Mike designing the artwork for Stanley Odd’s album Reject, banner art for the music blog Glasgow PodcArt as well as working with local label Fat Hippy Records.

To celebrate the release of their second album Indian Red Lopez will be embarking on a European tour.

Robert Rotifer – The Frankfurt Kitchen + London & Europe Dates

Rotifer are pleased to announce a succession of European live dates in March following the release of their 1960s / 1970s tinged album The Hosting Couple, which was released on Edwyn Collins, Grace Maxell and James Endeacott’s label AED Records.

The two UK dates are in London on 1 March at The Hideaway and on 30 March at Power Lunches.

March 1 The Hideaway, Tufnell Park, London
March 2 Flex, Vienna
March 3 Forum Stadtpark, Graz
March 4 Baeckerei, Innsbruck
March 30, Power Lunches (with Tigercats)

Fronted by creative multi-tasker Robert Rotifer, a songwriter, guitarist, writer and artist of Viennese extraction who has been based in the UK since the late 1990’s, Rotifer explores various styles of music from 1960’s psychedelia to garage punk to create a rich and varied listening experience. Having gone through various line-ups, a permanent three-piece was formed with the additions of Darren Hayman (ex-Hefner) on bass and producer/multi-instrumentalist Ian Button on drums.

Rotifer’s knack for teaming up with significant collaborators extended to the recording of The Hosting Couple, which was produced by Stiff Records legend Wreckless Eric.

This feeds in to the themes of The Hosting Couple, which in turn refers to Eric and his wife Amy (at their studio in France), Edwyn and Grace (on their record label) as well as the couple who hosted Robert as a youngster on an exchange to England from Austria.

Robert Rotifer was part of the Vostok 5 collective along with Darren Hayman, Paul Rains (Allo Darlin’), Duncan Fletcher (Tigercats) and Sarah Lipsett (Fever Dream), who were all musicians exhibiting together with artwork featuring animals and people in space. Robert also designs and illustrates all of his sleeve designs and videos, one of which ended up being exhibited in New York’s MoMA last year.

Robert had penned a tribute song The Frankfurt Kitchen (which came out on an earlier album, and was rerecorded last year as a b-side for the Canvey Island 7″ single), which focused around  Grete Schütte-Lihotzky, who was the first woman architect in Austria and inventor of one of the first prototypes for the fitted kitchen that is generally used in the West today.

Both Grete and Robert’s grandmother had faught in the resistance together against the Nazis during the Second World War and subsequently become members of the underground Austrian Communist Party. Grete lived to be over 100 before she died.  Robert had created a video for the song using simple animation of his own drawings and artwork as a backdrop to him singing solo with a guitar. The video was used by MoMa in New York to compliment their exhibition of Schütte-Lihotzky’s work.

Already an established musician in his native Austria (where he has topped the indie charts with his five solo albums), he is also the co-founder of Vienna’s annual popfest which showcases local talent.

The Hosting Couple by Rotifer is out now on AED Records.

Folk-Punk Crazy Arm – New Album, Single & UK Tour

Crazy Arm new album, single & 2011 live dates
Crazy Arm new album, Union City Breath

Crazy Arm new single, ‘Tribes‘, is to be released on Monday 15th August followed by a new album, ‘Union City Breath‘ due for release on 10th October 2011. Both are to be released on vinyl, CD & digital download via Xtra Mile Recordings (UK & rest of the world) & Gunner Records (mainland Europe).

Devon folk roots-punks, Crazy Arm new single is the first release ahead of their imminent new album, ‘Union City Breath‘.  A highlight of this live favourite, it is a song of two distinct parts, combining the band’s love of Springsteen, gospel and honest punk rock.  The lyrics are an indictment of man-made structures of violence and a call for a return to simpler, more ethically-centred ways of interacting. Also on the record: the voice of Victoria Butterfield (who sang on the band’s last single ‘Sweet Storm‘) and keys courtesy Patrick James Pearson.  The single will coincide with the band’s debut acoustic tour in August with Cory Branan and Sam Russo in August.

The follow-up to 2009’s dramatic debut, ‘Born To Ruin‘, ‘Union City Breath‘ was produced/engineered once again by Peter Miles (King Blues, The Computers, Sonic Boom Six) at his new studio in the South Devon countryside.  Taking its cue from the spurious idea of the Big Society, ‘Union City Breath‘ is a reminder that all societies are made by people and can be changed or at least challenged by people whenever they see fit. The band will be touring the album throughout the UK in September, and are the main support to Against Me! on their European/UK tour in November.

Crazy Arm set up camp in mid-2006. Not easy to categorise, and all the better for it, their sound is an accumulation of decades of influence and inspiration: rooted in hardcore/punk, 1960’s protest folk/country and classic rock’n’roll, combined with a grass-roots political overview that embraces anti-war, anti-fascist and pro-community activism.

They have toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe many times, sharing stages with the likes of Frank Turner, Chuck Ragan, The Xcerts, Bangers, Apologies I Have None, The Cut Ups, Two Cow Garage and Sonic Boom Six; and have made appearances at festivals including 2000 Trees, NASS, Leopallooza, Boardmasters, Reading and Leeds.
