John Edwards‘ A-Z of earliest guilty musical pleasures: Z is for Zen Arcade

Buzzin Music is proud to publish Tonota 80‘s John Edwards‘ A-Z of earliest guilty musical pleasures

Z is for Zen Arcade. The link between Husker Du‘s punk roots and the melodic noise that was to follow. The lyrics are pretty apt for the shit in this world today. Here endeth my A-Z. It didn’t turn out quite how I expected but it was fun doing it.

John Edwards‘ A-Z of earliest guilty musical pleasures: Y is for Neil Young

Buzzin Music is proud to publish Tonota 80‘s John Edwards‘ A-Z of earliest guilty musical pleasures

Y is for Neil Young. I could have picked one of many great songs by Young, be they acoustic or electric but chose this one. Great artist, great album. I remember playing in a band that covered this. I was an 18 year old mullet-haired podge thumping away on the drums whilst our brilliant guitarist John Muchlinski went off on one.

X is for X. Another gem from a compilation cassette given to me by my mate Dave Bloomfield.

John Edwards‘ A-Z of earliest guilty musical pleasures: W is for Rick Wakeman

W is for Rick Wakeman. One of my brothers had all of the early Rick Wakeman albums and I used to pester him and ask if I could play King Arthur on his stereogram. I don’t know why I got hooked on it and Guinevere in particular. I think it was because the melody is quite melancholy and sad yet beautiful. I still love hearing it now.

John Edwards‘ A-Z of earliest guilty musical pleasures: V is for Van Halen

Buzzin Music is proud to publish Tonota 80‘s John Edwards‘ A-Z of earliest guilty musical pleasures

V is for Van Halen. I am unashamedly a VH fan (well, the Dave Lee Roth years). Their first album is the best debut album I have ever heard but I was a real metal head in the late 70s so I could be persuaded otherwise.

This is my favourite track off the album. I remember taking my cassette player to school and playing this song to death at lunchtimes, boring the shite out of everybody in the process. This is not from the album itself. It’s as rough as bollocks but Eddie Van Halen is sounding good.
